This week we went on our second trip to the rice paddies. We are doing the steps slightly out of order, by working on transplanting during this trip. The second step is raking, which we will do on our next trip. On this trip, students learned what transplanting was, and why the rice plants need to be moved from the nursery to a larger area to grow. They also learned why it was important that they were planted in straight rows. Each student had the change to transplant a few rice plants into the new paddy. It was a very muddy experience (the pictures don't do justice to the deep mud!), which is why it is so important to wear rubber boots on these trips! Students had to keep their balance when walking through the mud and plant the rice in the soil. The farmer showed us how to use our thumb to push down the roots into the ground to ensure they were secure and standing up straight. After Christmas break we will head back to the paddies for our third visit!
