Classroom Blog
Throughout this week during our UOI, we have been learning about animal adaptations. When students came in from recess on Tuesday, I taped their thumb to their hand and did not tell them why. They then had to try and write their names, tie their shoes, and zip up their sweatshirts. While at first it was a struggle, they quickly ADAPTED to the situation to allow them to complete the tasks. We learned many different ways that animals adapt to survive. One adaptation that everyone found very interesting was camouflage. We decided to camouflage some insects around our classroom that blend in with the environment. Everyone did a great job. After we finished creating our insects, the class got to go around and see if they could find all of our hidden insects. Can you find them in the pictures?? We also completed adaptation centers. Students rotated to experience different adaptations animals have had to adapt to for survival. There were 4 centers. First, they completed a visual adaptation activity. Their vision was changed and they had to drop clothespins into a glass. They needed to figure out how to adapt to get it in each time. Next, students experienced a hand adaptation. They had to work on picking up marbles with spoons attached to gloves! This was a lot of fun. Students learned techniques, and realized how much easier it got with practice. Third, students did a mini-experiment to learn why how ducks have adapted to float on the water. They put a dry cotton ball and an oil soaked cotton ball in water and observed what happened. They then wrote what they believed ducks do to float. Lastly, students timed each other to see how many camouflaged butterflies they could find in 15 seconds. We had a great week learning about all of the different adaptations animals have that help them survive.
