We are almost through the school year and are trying to squeeze in as much fun and learning as possible. Last week was extra busy with some extra events. Tuesday night was our elementary concert. Our class did a great job singing their three songs, and incorporating instruments with their performance. Click on the button below to watch the whole concert! On Thursday, we had our elementary P.E. Day. We went over to Alarobia Stadium for the mile run, sprints, and long jump. It was a chilly morning, but we had a lot of fun. An extra congratuations goes to Mathys, who came in first place in the mile run against all grade 3, 4, and 5 boys! When we were at the long jump, Heidi Yanulis was taking mid-air pictures. They are great! She tried to capture everyone. Click the button below to visit her website and see the pictures.

Continuing with our insects Unit of Inquiry, we discussed our senses and how we use them to keep ourselves healthy and safe. I had a few bags that had different objects in them. Students could not use their sense of sight to help them, but had to use their hands to feel and guess what was in each bag. It was great seeing everyone's reaction to what they were feeling in the bag. Some students also used their sense of smell to help them. They were able to smell their hands after for some items to help discover what it was. We learned that animals also use their senses to help them. Some animals use their senses to stay safe from predators, and some animals use their senses to catch their prey. Each student was then given a specific animal to research and learn about how they use their senses. We then went outside to play the game Predator or Prey. The students who were prey had to run across the field to collect 'food'. They had to make it to food and back without being caught by a predator. Prey had to use their senses to ensure the predators would not catch them. We also began learning about ants, their different jobs, and the colonies they live in. Students read about ants in small groups and discussed what they learned. We then completed a fun ant art project. Students created their own ant colonies. It was a mix of fiction and non-fiction. Students included areas such as where the queen lays the eggs, and rooms where workers take care of the eggs. But there were also rooms where they would play basketball or watch TV. It was a fun project and they turned out looking great!
